TRUST
“Leadership is an achievement of trust.” - Peter Drucker
This year, I've sat with a few companies concerned with 'communication issues' among teams. And often, we've came to the conclusion that the underlying issue was a need for building trust.
Trust is the cornerstone of leadership. It’s the bridge that connects leader and team. When people trust you, they go the extra mile, listen more, and forgive easier. When trust is missing, everything becomes more challenging — people resist, fear takes over, and even the good intended communication takes a wrong turn.

Understanding TRUST
Definition: A feeling of confidence in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.
Message: "It is safe to connect and engage. "
TRUST in Leadership
The biggest trust-killer I've seen in organizations is a lack of transparency.
As a leader, building trust involves being open and vulnerable, which might not always feel comfortable but is super important.
Because trust communicates that we are connected to someone's truth. Without transparency, understanding this truth and, therefore, building a real connection, becomes impossible.
It's about letting people see the real you — sharing your thoughts and feelings honestly. However, this doesn't mean abandoning all discretion. It's about strategic vulnerability, knowing when and how much to share.
Communication Tips:
Focus on being transparent in these 4 aspects(The 4C's of trust):
- Commitment: Clearly communicate your plans and show consistent follow-through, updating the team on any changes.
- Caring: Show genuine concern and interest in the well-being of your team members.
- Consistency: Be the leader your team knows they can count on, no surprises.
- Competence: Share the thought process behind your decisions and the outcomes, both successes and failures.

🌟 Weekly Exercise:
This week, take some time to reflect on how you embody the 4Cs of Trust — Commitment, Caring, Consistency, and Competence — in your leadership. Use the following questions to guide your reflection and identify areas for growth:
- How do you communicate changes in plans or strategies to your team? Are there ways you could improve this communication?
- How can you demonstrate that you value and care for your team's professional growth on an ongoing basis?
- Reflect on your recent decisions and actions. Are you consistent in the values you uphold?
- Consider a recent challenge or decision. How did you demonstrate your ability and expertise in handling it?

And that's a wrap!
I'm immensely grateful for the support and trust you've placed in The EQ Edge, helping it grow to 487 subscribers this year! In the coming year, I aim to diversify the content to address specific emotional intelligence challenges and wins in the workplace as well.

Remember, it's a journey and not a destination. We are all practitioners of emotional intelligence, including myself.
